One July day my bonus sister, otherwise known as my brother Tom's wife, Victoria, and I headed to Pawhuska, Oklahoma. We had a few reasons to hit the road. One was the Pioneer Woman's Bakery. If you've never heard of Ree Drummond then you will have no idea what I am talking about. However, those of you know of our Pioneer Woman, she has a positively fabulous Mercantile and restaurant. However the wait may be 4 hours to dine. Rather than wait, we finished our shopping downstairs and headed upstairs to the bakery where enjoyed amazing sweet treats.
Another reason to head to Pawhuska was to try and catch a glimpse of some Hollywood celebrities like Leonardo or De Niro. Filming had been taking place in Pawhuska and surrounding areas the last month or so. Nary a celebrity was spotted that July 3rd, but we did get to see the movie sets and some old cars. It felt like we stepped back in time and could imagine what Pawhuska (or Fairfax, as some of the setting was for a neighboring town) was like when my Granny was a young child living in Chelsea, OK.
You can buy the book which was adapted for the movie, Killers of the Flower Moon.
The last time my family got to hug my sister was May 2020. Cancer won, we lost.
Due to Covid restrictions, we could not gather until April 2021 to celebrate her life. We met in Taos, NM which was Karen's Happy Place. We hiked to her favorite waterfalls and spread her ashes, each of us with a memory of climbing that mountain with her. Weather started cold, it snowed, lightly rained, then the sun came out as we reached the second waterfall.
Karen decided she wanted to go to Shreveport to a Mardi Gras parade and planned the best day for us!
Part of the package Karen bought from the Krewe of Centaur included t-shirts and dinner, plus some drink tickets. The food was a great Cajun experience!
I'm glad we went early so we saw some blue sky... it turned gray quickly and got chilly. It was February, after all.

Karen had a trip planned with her husband and best friends for her 60th birthday. Little did she know, her daughter had planned a birthday surprise! Thinking she was being treated to a special sushi dinner, she walked outside to find her kids, grandkids, and very favorite sister!
were spent splashing around the beach, enjoying family time, and eating some delicious food!
A very quiet trip with my sister... She was recovering from chemo but preparing for more. Off season at a ski town is always interesting, they were renovating the lodge we were staying... and only a few places were open to eat! Our limited selection was absolutely fabulous, plus we saw a waterfall! Saw Mesa Verde too!
